HEAR FROM A VOLUNTEER!

June 25, 2021

What happens ON the McDonald’s Kanga Cup field isn’t possible without what happens OFF the field.

There is a great amount of work put into the McDonald’s Kanga Cup to ensure it runs smoothly and an integral part of that work comes from volunteers.

Each year, dozens of people from around Canberra and surrounding regions put their hands up to help out, giving up their spare time to get the games off the ground.

Canberra has one of the highest populations of volunteers nationally and for this year’s McDonald’s Kanga Cup we’re going to shine the light on those who sacrifice their time.

Rebecca Taylor

What motivated you to start volunteering?

Volunteering allows you to meet lots of new people and keep in touch with old friends. Being a volunteer at the McDonald’s Kanga Cup also means I am meeting people with common interests and a love of football.

How long have you been volunteering for McDonald’s Kanga Cup?

This is my second year volunteering at Kanga, after joining in 2019.

What keeps you motivated to volunteer?

The smiles I see on the player’s faces and the gratitude I receive always makes it worth it.

Do you have a favourite moment from volunteering?

The excitement of the Opening Ceremony and of the players as they look forward to the week’s games.

How do you prepare for the McDonald’s Kanga Cup cold?

Lots of layers of clothing, a scarf and hand warmers in my pockets!

Gary Davis

What made you make the decision to become a KC volunteer?

Though I didn’t play soccer/football as a child, I managed by son’s weekend team at Mawson for 6 years and really enjoyed the way that the boys developed their skills and the sense of teamwork and comradery they had.

I do a lot of volunteering and thought the Kanga Cup was a very worthwhile venture to be involved with.  While at the same time being able to enjoy some good soccer/football games.

What do you love about it?

I think that it is a great opportunity for boys and girls of all soccer/football abilities to experience a large scale tournament with teams from all around Australia and sometimes overseas (in previous years) and test their skills against those teams.

What are some fond memories you can share of volunteering?

Teams and players enjoying wins when they happen, but also just enjoying the experience of competing in the tournament.

***

A big thank you goes out to all the McDonald Kanga Cup volunteers who help ensure the event runs smoothly as well as the club and team volunteers who ensure players have the best week possible.

The McDonald’s Kanga Cup would be nothing without your efforts!
