CLUB IN FOCUS: SOUTH COAST UNITED

July 18, 2025

South Coast United’s U16s are making waves once again, not just on the field, but as ambassadors for one of Illawarra’s most promising football clubs. Competing in the prestigious Kanga Cup, the team continues to impress with its blend of talent, commitment and community spirit.

Based in the heart of the Illawarra competition, South Coast United has steadily built a reputation for developing strong junior teams that aren’t just competitive locally, but more than capable on national stages. Their growing profile in tournaments like the Kanga Cup is a direct reflection of the club’s long-term investment in youth and its emphasis on fostering both football skills and character.

A standout example of this ethos is U16s player Ashton Podmore. A composed and energetic presence in the midfield, Ashton was scouted by the club’s CEO five years ago and has grown through the ranks of the club ever since.

“I was playing for another team and the South Coast United CEO came and watched one of my games. I got scouted and joined the club that year,” Podmore recalls. “It’s been a great journey. This club has helped shape me as a player.”

His journey is far from unique at United. The club prides itself on nurturing raw potential and giving players opportunities to rise. According to Podmore, the club’s strength isn’t just in its training sessions or competition record, but in its people.

“This place is special because of the people,” he said. “Everyone is friendly, supportive, and it’s a good environment to grow. The coaches, the players, the committee they all make you want to do better.”

That sense of unity is echoed across the U16s team. The players have their eyes firmly set on improving together, not just individually. Ashton says the team’s main focus is on working more cohesively and performing at their best in big competitions like the Kanga Cup.

“One thing we’re really trying to develop is how we work together,” Podmore admitted. “We’ve got good players, but to win at these levels, you need to be strong as a unit. We’ve been training hard to improve our chemistry and teamwork.”

The club’s progress is also thanks to the tireless efforts of the committee and the wider community, who have helped steer South Coast United into a period of growth and ambition.

“It’s the commitment behind the scenes that really makes the difference,” Podmore added. “The committee works really hard to give us opportunities, whether it’s making sure we get to these tournaments, organising everything behind the scenes, or just being there every game.”

As the Kanga Cup unfolds, South Coast United’s U16s are aiming high. Their ambitions aren’t just about winning they’re about continuing to build a strong foundation for the future.

“This team has what it takes to be really successful,” Podmore says with a smile. “We’re strong, we’ve got each other’s backs, and we want to make the most of every opportunity we get. That’s what makes us special we don’t give up.”

With players like Ashton Podmore leading the way and a club culture built on dedication and connection, South Coast United’s path forward looks bright. If they continue to grow at this pace, their Kanga Cup story might just be another chapter in a much bigger success story for Illawarra football.
