Phillip Island might be better known for the roar of bike engines as the home of the Australian MotoGP and for its colony of penguins than its football, but there is one group of youngsters that are seeking to set that record straight. Meet the Phillip Island Breakers.
A small community club based on Phillip Island in Victoria with around 140 members, the Breakers are heading to Canberra and the Kanga Cup for a debut entry, and they can’t wait to get involved!
“This is our first time coming to the Kanga Cup, and we are super excited!” Liam Jury, Club Coaching Coordinator, told kangacup.com.
“We want to give our kids an experience they won’t forget. Getting to travel with a team and play in tournaments is what we love to do. We have experienced tournaments in Victoria but nothing quite as big as this!”
The Phillip Island Breakers were formed as recently as 1994 and prides itself on providing top-quality accredited coaching, as well as equipment, to enable players to reach their potential. They forge strong links with their amazing local community and aim to increase participation in the South Gippsland area.
“We are excited to meet other teams who have travelled a long distance to play in this exciting tournament,” Jury revealed of his team’s entry.
“I have played in the Gothia Cup in Sweden, so I am hoping that it has a similar feel with some teams from over countries all coming together to play football. It’s a real opportunity for our players to see what the standard of football is like in NSW and ACT.”
The trip to Canberra from Phillip Island will be an adventure in itself for the group, and they will no doubt be keen to visit the other many attractions that the National Capital can offer visitors in July. But, overall, it’s the experience the team are looking forward to.
“Outside of the football, we aim to visit Parliament House, and other attractions. We cannot wait to be involved as a club and hope this is the start of an annual trip from Phillip Island.”
The Kanga Cup commences with an Opening Ceremony on Sunday 7 July 2024.
