Following a successful run in the 2018 McDonald’s Kanga Cup, the Wagga City Wanderers will be back in 2019 with a staggering 15 teams competing across nine divisions in a mix of Cup, Plate and Shield competitions.

It’s certainly no easy feat for the Club to coordinate, but thoroughly worthwhile.

“The logistics and putting players into teams and making sure everyone is available and ready to go takes a lot of work from volunteers,” said Football Wagga’s Development Officer, Liam Dedini.

“Our sponsors, volunteers, parents, coaches and committee all do an extreme amount of work to make these things happen!”

“Putting together information packs and details as early as possible is key for us so parents can book accommodation and be organised ASAP. Bringing 15 teams from Wagga Wagga is fantastic and I think the last few years we have actually been the largest represented Club which is awesome. …We had eleven teams last year and this year we have fifteen, so it will be even bigger.”

Football Wagga has enjoyed sending teams to the McDonald’s Kanga Cup for many years, and Liam remembers making the Grand Final as a player when he was 11 in 2007.

“[It] was massive for Wagga. We played against New Zealand in the quarter finals and it was an amazing experience,” he said.

The Wanderers work hard to ensure that their teams have a week that is competitive, but also about enjoyment and development. Liam says that it’s great for the kids to have the experience of being a professional footballer in a full time environment.

“As a club we are always looking to improve our young players by entering them in competitions and gala days for them to improve their skills and develop as players and coaches,” Liam explained. “Being based in a rural area this does involve a lot of time, travel and financial commitment from our players and parents but it is all worth it seeing the kids enjoy themselves and develop as young players.”

“We see the McDonald’s Kanga Cup a great opportunity for our players to develop and experience many different football and life qualities throughout the week,” Liam said.
